Named after the famous ‘Jagannath Puri’ temple which was built in the late eleventh century; Puri city is one of the important cities of the East Indian state of Orissa. Located on the coast of Bay of Bengal, Puri is one of the unique places from the beaches of which both the sunset and sunrise can be viewed. Being one of the oldest cities of the eastern part of the country; Puri is full of historical places and monuments and of late has been fast developing into a major tourist destination, being a good combination of religious and leisure tourism. According to historical religious references; Puri is the only shrine in the country where Radha abodes with Lord Krishna. As per the historical legends, Puri is one of the four cardinal institutions which had been established by the erstwhile guru; Adi Shankaracharya. Modern day Puri is well known throughout the world for its annual ‘Rath Yatra’ or the ‘Festival of Chariots’ wherein several deities like Jagannath, Subhadra and Balbhadra are brought out of the temple and taken in on a chariot processions. In addition to this the town is also home to various Hindu mathas and has since time immemorial been considered an ideal place for human beings to leave their body i.e. to die.

Places like the Jagannath Temple, Karar Ashram, Swargdwar (Gateway to heaven); Konark Sun Temple and the beach are some of the places which entice people to come into Puri. Being at such an important position with regards to Hindu Mythology; the city is counted amongst the holiest cities of the country. Pilgrims and leisure tourists come into the city in thousands almost on a daily basis. Then there is a huge percentage of population which comes into the city either to carry on their onward journey’s to explore the other parts of the state or is coming in enroute from other destinations.

The availability of hotels which provide accommodation in Puri is primarily concentrated between two areas. There are numerous 3 and 4 star hotels and resorts providing accommodation which are based near the beach. The other concentration of these accommodation providers is towards the city centre near the other important pilgrimage centres of the city.
