Known as the commercial and cultural capital of the state of Orissa, Cuttack is the second largest city of the state and is also one of the oldest cities of the country. As per the historical records available, the city of Cuttack was established close to 989 A.D. and hence is often referred to as the ‘Millennium City’ of the country. Before the christening of ‘Bhubaneswar’ as the capital city of the state; Cuttack was the capital of the state of Orissa for close to ten centuries. In the present day scenario, Cuttack is world renowned for its unique craft known as the filigree art. Filigree art involves carving on silver, brass, ivory and woven silk and the works are exported to different parts of the world. The prominence of Cuttack as an established and important commercial centre started during the British rule, wherein it was considered an important contact point between the British merchants based in Bengal and Marathas in Nagpur.

The city still has remainents of old historical fort known as the Barabati Fort on its outskirts. One of the oldest temples in Cuttack known as the ‘Gada Chandi temple’ is located inside the fort. The city otherwise is also filled with various temples which date back into the history and a major source of tourist attraction in this part of the world. Apart from the various Hindu temples, the city is also home to various other places of worship for people of other religions. Cuttack boasts of some of the most prominent mosques and Sikh shrines within the country. Cuttack is also famous across the country for its culinary delights and dishes like ‘dahibara’ and ‘aludum’ are preferred and savored by people of all walks of life.

Cuttack is an important commercial centre for the entire region with one of the largest groceries wholesale market of the state. It is also an important shopping destination for people especially for jewellery made with the filigree art.  People interested in buying filigree art jewellery can find these in the various local jewellery shops which are strewn all across the face of Cuttack. The sports and recreation facilities in Cuttack are very well organized for with world class cricket stadium and facilities for other sports can be found in abundance.

All this has made Cuttack a much frequented city by people who come into the city because of various purposes. Business and leisure being the most prominent reason people to come into the city has increased the demand for hospitality industry in the city. Although being in close proximity with the capital city of Bhubaneswar, there are no major luxury hotels which provide accommodation in Cuttack but there are several budget segment and local hotels which cater to traveler’s needs and requirements. Alternative to these budget or local hotels, there are various resorts which have mushroomed and are effective providers of accommodation in Cuttack. Seeing the influx of people and the demand in the hospitality sector; the government has initiated several steps and initiatives with the help of which the availability of accommodation in Cuttack will increase manifold and travelers will not have to frequent between the twin cities for work and accommodation or vice versa.
