Port Blair is the capital city of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The largest town of the Union Territory; Port Blair which is situated on the eastern point of South Andaman Islands is the entry point for people who come into this Island Union Territory. The islands of Andaman and Nicobar are also known as ‘Emerald Islands’ are in today’s date a much vaunted tourist destination. The history of Port Blair dates back to late 1780’s when it is believed to have been established by the government of Bengal. It was established as a colony by the government and because of widespread destruction and life threatening diseases; Port Blair was shut down. It gained prominence again during the British Rule when the Britisher’s established Port Blair again and set up a prison here. The prison which was known as the Cellular Jail to the British was used to house mainly Indian Political prisoners who were caught fighting the freedom movement against the rulers. Prisoners were made to undergo such ill treatment, solitary confinement and torture in the prison in Port Blair; that they named the prison as ‘Kala Pani’ which in English means ‘Black Water’. |
Port Blair and other parts of Andaman Islands suffered a major ocean earthquake recently. Known as the Indian Ocean Earthquake; it devastated and damaged most parts of the islands except Port Blair. It was Port Blair which became the base for relief work and supplies were transported from the city to other devastated parts of the islands.
